Yuan Rong Zhang

Chinese Canadian (b. Shanghai), currently based in Luxembourg. Studio at the Annexes of Château Bourglinster.

My works cover subjects from insects to stars, and everything in between, connecting back with two of my favourite activities in childhood – star gazing and insect observation – simple gestures of looking up and looking down. It seems I have always been interested in looking, observing the opposites, noticing the nuances, imagining an alternative reality – detecting the border.

My practice focuses on working with mixed materials through painting and drawing, graphics, and image-based, site-specific installation, inspired by science and science fiction, ancient astronomy and mythology, animals (especially insects), and space-time related concepts. It is my attempt to reflect on relations and relativity, order and dynamics, transition and transformation, and how to work with uncertainty and the uncontrollable. In my works, the macroscopic and microscopic, organic and artificial, finite and infinite share a common ground. Like warp and weft, together they weave into something open yet ambiguous, with a promise of growth and evolution.

Recently, my research and projects take a closer look at frames and border, the sky, Chinese mythology, and insect metamorphosis while working with spaces and experimenting on water, powder, and reflective materials.
