Yuan Rong Zhang

Canadian born in Shanghai, currently based in Luxembourg. Studio at the Annexes of Château Bourglinster.

My works cover subjects from insects to stars, and everything in between, connecting back with two of my favourite activities in childhood – star gazing and insect observation – simple gestures of looking up and looking down. It seems I have always been interested in looking, seeing the opposites, observing the contrasts, scaling things in my mind – detecting the border.

Naturally, exploring the possibilities of connection between these qualities occupies an essential part of my practice. In my works, the macroscopic and microscopic, organic and industrial, digital and analogue, rational and intuitive share a common ground. Like warp and weft, together they weave into something ambiguous, uncertain, yet-to-be-defined. Moments of transformation and growth.

Imagination lies in the heart of my practice. Working with mixed materials through painting, drawing, and installation, I draw inspirations from science fiction, mythology, nature in transition, and concepts related to time and space. My practice is an attempt to reflect on reality/memory/illusion, the interconnectedness, how to work with the uncontrollable, what does it mean to be borderless, etc.

Recently, my research and projects take a closer look at edges and border, the sky, insect life cycle and metamorphosis while experimenting on fluidity, transparency, reflectivity, and the representation of a space.
