Yuan Rong Zhang

Chinese Canadian (b. Shanghai), currently based in Luxembourg. Studio at the Annexes of Château Bourglinster.


My subjects range from insects to stars, and everything in between, connecting back with two of my favourite activities as a child – star gazing and insect observation – simple gestures of looking up and looking down. It further leads to my interest in exploring opposites and polarities, bringing together qualities that at first sight may appear unrelated or incompatible.

Inspired by science and science fiction, space and space exploration, I explore relations and relativity, notions of time and space through painting, design, digital media, and image-based, site-specific installation, placing an emphasis on the use of materials and the connections between concept, method, and expression.

Recently, my research and projects take a closer look at the sky, windowscape, and spatial relationships while experimenting on water, fibre, and reflective materials.
